Asia Cup 2020: Big Question Mark
No decision on Asia Cup 2020 yet due to Coronavirus.
The Asian Cricket Council and the member nations are yet to take a call on the future of the tournament. In fact, the host association Pakistan Cricket Board also confirmed that there isn’t much information to be given. The status of the tournament which was to be played in September’20 is doubtful.
The coronavirus outbreak has brought the world to a standstill. It has also created a scenario where the fate of sporting activities in the next six months hangs in balance. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics has already been postponed. The IPL 2020 will probably stand suspended and Asia Cup is also likely to be given a skip this year.
The current situation has forced the postponement or suspension of major sports events globally. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had already clarified of not sending the Indian players to Pakistan due to the political tensions prevailing in between the two nations. He had also made it clear that this could be sorted out if PCB organizes the event at a neutral venue.
The ACC board was to take a decision earlier this month in Dubai. The meeting scheduled was called off due to the Covid-19 outbreak. It was decided that the meeting would be held later this month, but it is yet to happen.
A decision on the fate of the Indian Premier League is also expected around mid-April as per Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. While he did say that the final call lies with the BCCI. He also made it clear that at present the safety of the citizens was the priority and the directives of the government needed to be abided.
Cricket, which is played all year, has come to a standstill, too, for the first time since World War II.
